Belleville, Ill. - The ICC Volleyball team (17-9) had a shot at moving up the Region 24 standings on Friday afternoon with a tri-match on the campus of Southwestern Illinois.
With the hosts and in-region foe SWIC up first, the Cougars had a close battle. after needing to go past the usual 25 points in the opener (26-24), ICC dropped the second set by a slim 22-25 margin. The Cougars would take the next two, including a dominant 25-9 third set. The four-set win over Southwestern Illinois has ICC at least temporarily atop the region standings (7-0) by a half-match over Parkland (6-0).
There was still another match on tap, with the Cougars taking on the JV squad from Missouri Baptist University. ICC was able to make fairly quick work of the nightcap, rolling to their 14th 3-0 sweep of the season, 25-16, 25-9, and 25-18.
Brooke Ely would combine for 58 assists on the day.
Hannah Alvey (25 combined) and
Gracie Schultz (23 combined) were on the leaderboard for kills in both of the Cougars' matches on Friday. Alvey (14 kills, 14 digs) and Ely (15 digs, 35 assists) had double-doubles in the SWIC win.
ICC ups their win streak to five matches with Friday's wins.
The Cougars have a fair amount of time away from matches now; five days to be exact. What looms next is an exciting matchup, an extension of the ICC-Parkland rivalry, as the Cougars travel to the Dodds Athletic Complex in Champaign next Wednesday. Parkland is on a 10-match winning streak, while the Cobras still have four matches before their matchup with ICC. The Cougars will also play Joliet as part of the tri-match.
