Dayja Evans's career high 25 points led the #4 ICC women's basketball team to a 116-42 win over Illinois Valley CC on Saturday afternoon in Oglesby. The Cougars used a 38-5 run over a ten-minute stretch from the middle of the first quarter to middle of the second quarter to break the game open and get their first win of the season.
With the score tied at 7-all at the 5:07 mark, two Kayla Gordon assists to Evans sparked a 17-0 run to give ICC a 24-7 advantage after one period. Kyleigh Block nailed the first trey of her college career (assist Laisha Armendariz-Lopez), T'yana Lovelace scored inside, Saniya Tutt had an old-fashioned three-point play and Gordon added a basket to provide some of the scoring punch.
The Cougars kept the run going, outscoring IVCC 21-5 to open the second quarter and surge to a 41-12 lead. Gray, Gordon, Lovelace, and Cierra McNamee provided the scoring punch while the team stayed tough defensively, recording 11 turkeys (three stops in a row on defense) to build a 56-18 halftime advantage.
ICC used a variety of lineups in the second half and had nice plays as Courtney Jones helped engineer the zone offense with several nice passes inside. The Cougars hit the century mark on Evans' fourth trey of the game (assist Block) as they cruised to the win.
