East Peoria, Ill. - The #3 ICC women's basketball team (14-6, 4-0) used a big first half to earn a 79-60 win over Spoon River College (10-8, 1-3) on Saturday afternoon in Mid-West Athletic Conference action at Ramsey Gym. The Cougars outscored SRC 29-10 in the second quarter to post a 44-19 lead at the half, holding the Snappers to 21% shooting and forcing nine turnovers to get a comfortable lead. SRC did outscore ICC in the second half, but the Cougars still got the win to record their ninth consecutive victory.
ICC limited SRC to 4-15 on field goal shooting in the opening frame to take a 15-9 lead after one. A
Saniya Tutt three-pointer (assisted by
Dayja Evans) and free throws by
Kayla Gordon and
Cierra McNamee pushed the lead to double digits at 22-9. Spoon River pulled to within 24-15, but
Derria Edwards got a steal and layup to spark a 19-4 run to close the half.
Kyleigh Block and
Peyton Dearing hit back-to-back three-pointers, and McNamee,
Kristyn Mitchell, Block and Evans combined for scores giving ICC a 25-point lead at the half.
The Cougars opened the half in strong fashion as Mitchell, McNamee, and Gordon scored giving ICC their biggest lead on the afternoon at 52-23 with 7:16 to play. However, the Snappers got their offense going to help cut their deficit to 65-43 heading into the final period. Play continued to be physical in the fourth as the Cougars managed only three field goals but took several trips to the charity stripe (going 8-11) to close out the game and get the win.
