Moline, Ill. - The 20th-ranked ICC women's basketball team (2-2) began quite the venture on Tuesday night. The Cougars are on a stretch where they will play three games in two states over the course of four days. That got started by heading up and over to the Quad Cities to take on the Black Hawk Braves (3-2) in a Region 24/Region 4 crossover. For the majority of the game, Black Hawk led, but the Cougars would continually chip away, not letting the game get out of hand. That was the case all the way down until the closing seconds, when
Imari McDuffy knocked down a pair of free throws to tie the game at 80 with roughly six seconds to go. Then, the Cougars got called for a loose ball foul, and the Braves made 1-2 bonus free throws. ICC was unable to make a buzzer-beater attempt and the scoreboard went final - Black Hawk 81, #20 ICC 80.
The first few minutes were a see-saw affair as
Naomi Elliott had seven first quarter points but Black Hawk countered with three three-pointers to take a 25-18 lead.
Miya Webb got on track in the second quarter as she nailed a three-pointer and two other jumpers but the Cougar defense continued to lose the Braves' shooters, allowing BHC to connect on four more treys and grab a 47-35 halftime advantage.
Black Hawk kept rolling to start the third, and the Cougars were unable to make up ground despite two treys from Webb and six points from
Elena Redgate and ICC trailed 65-53 heading into the final stanza.
ICC finally picked up the intensity on defense which led to better offensive opportunities and clawed all the way back behind two treys from
Savannah Orgeron and six points from forward
Jhanel Coleman in the paint but it wasn't quite enough to pull out the win.
