Grand Rapids, Mich. - Cora DeSutter's career-high 23 points and 12 rebounds led the #20 Illinois Central College women's basketball team (2-3) to an 85-48 win over Grand Rapids on Friday night at Ford Fieldhouse. DeSutter (Midwest Central HS) shot 8-11 from the field and was a menace on the boards with eight offensive caroms to record her first collegiate double-double.
Naomi Elliott (14 points & career-high 6 steals),
Savannah Orgeron (14 points), and
Paris Wilson (11 points & 5 rebounds) all notched double figures while
Imari McDuffy had a career-high 5 assists to break the Cougars' three-game losing streak. ICC held a commanding 54-29 edge on the glass to go along with 20 assists.
"We did a better job rebounding and that helped us get second chance points and get out into transition," coach
Karrie Redeker said. "We also got strong production from our bench so that was good to see."
ICC raced out to an 18-2 lead as Elliott and Orgeron combined for ten of those points in the early going. DeSutter then went on a personal 7-0 run to extend the lead to 27-11 after the first quarter.
The Raiders started the second period on a 7-0 run to pull to within 27-18 but DeSutter answered with a three-pointer and Addi Swadinksy scored inside to get things going back in the right direction for ICC. Elliott then scored six straight points to help the Cougars take a 49-29 lead at intermission. The Cougars were active on the defensive end, forcing 14 Raider turnovers in the first half, and a total of 26 for the game.
Orgeron, DeSutter, and Elliott combined for all of the Cougar scores in the third to push the lead to 62-40 and ICC cruised from there.
