East Peoria, Ill. - Back home again in Illinois. It doesn't quite roll off the tongue as well as the famed song about the neighboring state, but it was the case nonetheless for ICC Women's Basketball, as they took their home court of Ramsey Gym on Wednesday night against Carl Sandburg (9-2), a red-hot team out of Region 4 that had won eight games straight coming into the contest. Outside of a surge from the Chargers in the game's midsection, the Cougars played clean, cohesive basketball, and rolled to an 87-62 home win over Carl Sandburg, snapping the visitors' 8-game win streak.
Cora DeSutter recorded a double-double with 21 points and 13 rebounds while three new career-highs were set in the game, including
Addi Swadinsky (15 points),
Paris Wilson (14 points), and
Jhanel Coleman (13 points).
Miya Webb and
Elena Redgate each had 10 points as the Cougars improved their record to 5-4.
DeSutter scored ICC's first nine points on two three-pointers, a two-point field goal, and a free throw to put the home team up 9-0 at the 6:24 mark. Wilson hit back-to-back layups in transition to give the Cougars a 19-5 lead three minutes later. Two Redgate scores and a three-pointer by Webb gave the Cougars a 27-14 advantage after one.
ICC kept pushing the ball in transition to keep their advantage as Swadinsky put up nine points in the second frame and
Saniya Tutt scored in transition to give the Cougars a 46-34 lead at the half.
The Cougars turned up the defense in the third period as Webb and Swadinsky each blocked shots. Offensively Coleman got going in the paint to score seven points and help increase the home team's lead to 65-42.
Wilson added an offensive put-back and Coleman scored two baskets in transition to keep ICC cruising to the finish line. Swadinsky added a three-pointer and DeSutter connected on two more for the final margin.
