Danville, Ill. - The Illinois Central College women's basketball team suffered a 75-69 setback to Danville Area on Saturday afternoon in Region 24/M-WAC action at Mary Miller Gymnasium. DACC used a surge late in the first quarter to take control until a late Cougar rally made things interesting late in the game but the Jaguars made enough plays down the stretch to get the win. ICC drops to 16-8 overall and 4-3 in Region 24 while Danville is now 13-7 and 4-3.
The teams played to a 10-all tie as
Cierra McNamee had five early points but Danville went on an 8-0 run to take an 18-10 first quarter lead.
Laisha Armendariz Lopez nailed a three-pointer at the beginning of the second quarter and
Kyleigh Block and
Halie Gilbert scored inside but ICC could not stop the DACC attack to make a dent in the deficit as the Jaguars took a 35-25 advantage into halftime.
Block and
Peyton Dearing scored to start the third but the Jaguars stayed aggressive to take their largest lead of the afternoon at 48-34 with 6:46 left in the third. The Cougar offense stayed the course behind the inside play of
T'yana Lovelace, seven points from Dearing, and a three-pointer and basket from
Paris Wilson, sparking a run and facing just a 56-50 deficit heading into the final period.
Unfortunately the ICC offense sputtered early in the fourth while Danville hit back-to-back treys to grab back their double-digit lead at 64-51. On the defensive end, the Cougars finally strung together stops while Gilbert scored four points and Dearing nailed back-to-back three-pointers to draw ICC to within 72-67 with just under a minute to play. The Cougars could not get the last few shots to fall and Danville closed out the game with free throws.
