D1 #25 SE Iowa slips away from MBB

Cougars lose late lead; travel to Spoon River next

2/23/2023 9:27:00 AM

West Burlington, Iowa - After getting so accustomed to the confines of Ramsey Gym, ICC men's basketball (9-17, 1-6) was back on the road Wednesday night, traveling westbound to play Southeastern Iowa, a team ranked 25th in the latest NJCAA Division-I poll. The Cougars trailed at the half, but made a furious comeback to take a lead that it looked like they'd never surrender. Leading 61-55 with 2:40 remaining, the Blackhawks got hot, and the Cougars went cold. Southeastern Iowa would close the game on a 7-0 run and sneak away with the 62-61 victory over ICC.

The hosts started out strong, with a double figure lead of 35-25 after 20 minutes. That opening period saw the Blackhawks nearly shoot 50% from the field (48%), while holding ICC to 28.6% shooting.

The Cougars came out of the halftime locker room rejuvenated, going on a 7-0 run, they'd eventually tie the game at 36. In what was looking like a game of runs, the Blackhawks responded with a 6-0 run of their own.

Eventually, ICC took that 61-55 lead. Unfortunately, a combination of turnovers and missed opportunities at the free throw line allowed Southeastern Iowa to make that last 7-0 run and the D1 Top 25 win would ultimately slip away from the Cougars.
