West Burlington, IA - The ICC baseball team (14-25, 8-12) stayed on the road Thursday, but took a brief break from MWAC play with a trip over to Southeastern Iowa for a midweek game. The game would certainly not see a lack of offense, with both teams combining for 17 runs and 15 hits in an 11-6 win for the Blackhawks.
Southeastern Iowa struck first with a bases-loaded hit by pitch and RBI sacrifice fly to take a 2-0 lead after two innings.
What followed would turn out to be ICC's biggest offensive inning of the afternoon, with
Beau Durbin (RBI double),
Josh Heyder (RBI double), and
Hunter Thornton (RBI single) all tallying RBI hits to quickly erase the deficit and take a 3-2 lead.
The game continued to take on a back-and-forth position, with the Blackhawks answering with an RBI single, and ICC responding right back with an RBI double from Durbin, and Durbin scoring on a wild pitch for two separate lead changes and eventually a 5-4 ICC lead through four and a half.
However, an RBI sac fly and RBI double gave the hosts the game's final lead at 7-5 in the fifth.
ICC's bats would capitalize one last time with a RBI sac fly from
Matt Evans in the sixth to pull within a 9-6 score. The Blackhawks would score once in both the sixth and the seventh for insurance runs and to set the final score.
Durbin and Thornton were responsible for four of ICC's eight hits, with the duo each collecting two hits and at least one RBI.
Kaiser Quick,
Kannon Kelly,
Kaiden Rixner, and
Cole Thomas all combined their efforts on the mound, with the group totaling 11 strikeouts against Southeastern Iowa hitters.
It's a very short turnaround for the Cougars from here. In fact, there's almost no turnaround time. They'll return to Thome Field on Friday afternoon in a resumption of conference action to start their series with Spoon River. ICC won the series in 2022 3-1, while splitting the two games played in East Peoria.
