Galesburg, Ill. - It was right back on the road for ICC baseball (18-26, 12-12) on Wednesday afternoon, as the Cougars made the drive up I-74 for a midweek matchup with the Carl Sandburg Chargers. ICC had won a slim 3-2 game against the Chargers back in March. The biggest change from the first meeting - the bats. From five combined runs to 23 combined runs, the Cougars were unable to erase an early 12-2 deficit, and Carl Sandburg would take a 15-8 win, despite ICC out-scoring the Chargers 6-3 after that lead had been taken.
The hosts used an RBI double to take a 1-0 lead in a seemingly quiet first inning. ICC, meanwhile, responded quickly, with an
Eli Boeye RBI single and
Tyler Bishop scoring on an error allowing the lead to change hands, and ICC would lead 2-1 after an inning and a half.
Carl Sandburg utilized two duplicate five-run innings to pull ahead and secure the lead for good. Trailing at the aforementioned 12-2 margin, the Cougars would score four runs unanswered. The fifth inning saw
Beau Durbin scoring
Luke Doty on an RBI groundout, before Bishop launched a solo home run. Doty would single to score both Boeye and
Nate Stear to cap that 4-0 run.
The Cougars weren't quite done with the long ball, either. Bishop hit another solo homer to bring ICC's scoring to seven runs on the day. A Boeye single to score
Camden Porter wrapped up the Cougar offense for the day at eight runs.
ICC now turns their attention to their second-to-last MWAC series of the regular season, taking on the Danville Area Jaguars. Danville Area did win the series a year ago at 3-1, but the Cougars did score eight and 13 runs in two of those four games. The home half of the series leads things off, with the Cougars hosting Danville Area at Thome Field on Saturday, with game one of the twinbill set to start at 1PM.
