East Peoria, Ill. - Breathe in, breathe out.
Miya Webb nailed a game-winning three-pointer with seven seconds left to lift the ICC women's basketball team (12-7, 2-1) to a nail-biting 67-64 victory over #18 Lincoln Land (15-3, 2-1) in Region 24/MWAC action at Ramsey Gym on Saturday. Webb had a career-high double-double, breaking her prior career marks with 22 points and 10 rebounds, respectively. On top of both numbers being career highs, it was also Webb's first collegiate double-double.
Addi Swadinsky added 11 points, five rebounds, and three assists, while
Paris Wilson had 10 points, and
Cora DeSutter tallied nine points (all in the second half) to go along with three assists in a game that saw 13 lead changes and six ties.
"This was a great bounce-back win," head coach
Karrie Redeker said. "Our kids made an effort to bring more energy and it helped us stay the course, especially when we got down double digits in the second quarter. Credit our kids for sticking together and finding a way."
ICC went up 8-7 before a Lincoln Land run gave the Loggers a 17-12 advantage after the opening quarter. Lincoln Land stayed on the attack, opening a 30-19 lead (would wind up being their largest of the game) to start the second quarter, but Wilson got the Cougars back on track with an old-fashioned three-point play, and other score to whittle the Logger lead to 34-31.
Elena Redgate and Wilson added two more scores to give ICC a 35-34 edge at the half.
To open the third, ICC got two long-range bombs from Webb and scores from
Cora DeSutter and Orgeron to extend their lead to 47-42 midway through the third. After a Swadinsky jumper, Lincoln Land went on an 8-0 run to grab the lead back at 52-49 heading into the fourth.
The Loggers stayed on top at 57-52 before Webb hit a runner and Swadinsky nailed a trey (assist Redgate) to draw to within 59-57. Lincoln Land held the lead at 62-60 with two minutes to play when DeSutter scored inside. Then on the next possession, DeSutter had a spin move in transition to give the Cougars a 64-62 lead with 1:27 to play. Neither team scored until the Loggers hit a jumper with 26 seconds to play and a 64-64 tie. ICC called timeout and worked the ball into Orgeron who was double-teamed. Orgeron then kicked out to Webb who knocked down the game-winner from the left wing with 7.3 seconds remaining. Lincoln Land tossed up a desperation heave from roughly a foot behind the three-point arc, but it was to no avail, and ICC got the three-point victory.
Final statistics showed the Cougars with a 44-30 rebounding edge and an 11-15 effort from the free throw line (73%). Both teams shot 41% from the field, but the Cougar defense held strong in the final period, holding the Loggers to just 4-14 shooting (29%).
