East Peoria, Ill. - Solid shooting for the Illinois Central College women's basketball team (18-10, 8-4) to an 87-58 win over Spoon River (0-22, 0-12) on Sophomore Day in M-WAC/Region 24 action on Saturday afternoon. The Cougars shot 47% on the afternoon, including an 8-17 effort from three-point range to get the win.
Savannah Orgeron led the way with 16 points, while
Cora DeSutter had 12 points and eight rebounds, and Myia Webb and
Paris Wilson each added 11 points.
Imari McDuffy added nine points while dishing out a game-high eight assists.
Macy Petelin got the Cougars on the board with a layup on the opening tip. Petelin, a sophomore from Normal University High School, suffered a season-ending knee injury in October, but suited up for the opening play to give the Cougars the lead. ICC held a 10-8 advantage and then went on a 10-0 run, as McDuffy and Webb nailed back-to-back three-pointers, and DeSutter added a putback to give ICC an 18-8 lead. DeSutter scored on a jumper (assist McDuffy) to put ICC up 21-13 after one quarter.
Addi Swadinsky,
Saniya Tutt, and Orgeron combined for the next Cougar scores to open up a 35-20 lead midway through the second quarter, but the Snappers stayed within striking distance (39-26) at intermission.
The Cougars focused on their defense in the third quarter and it paid off, as they went on an 11-2 run to start the half. Webb nailed a three-pointer and DeSutter and Wilson each added scores for a 50-27 lead. After a
Jhanel Coleman basket, Orgeron scored the next seven points while
Naomi Elliott took a charge to help the Cougars to a 66-36 lead heading into the fourth. The Cougars kept on the attack as McDuffy added a trey and all players reached the scoring column in the win.
