Poor Shooting Snaps #7 WBB's Win Streak

Cougars fall for first time since December 29th

Springfield, IL - The seventh-ranked Illinois Central College Women's Basketball team (20-5, 10-1) had their 12-game winning streak halted at the hands of the ninth-ranked Lincoln Land Loggers (23-2, 9-2) on Wednesday night, falling 58-41 at Cass Gym. The Cougars never got on track offensively, as they suffered through an 0-16 shooting night from three-point range for their lowest offensive output of the season.

"Gotta give credit to Lincoln Land, as they held the upper hand from the beginning," head coach Karrie Redeker said. "They pressured us defensively and attacked us on the offensive end, which never allowed us to get into a rhythm. In the second half, we played better defensively, but still couldn't get our offense going to make a dent in the score."

The teams opened the game evenly as the Cougars got baskets by Lily Luczkowiak, Addy Engel, and Addi Swadinsky for a 6-all tie. However, Lincoln Land went on a run to take a 19-12 lead after the first quarter.

Baskets by Engel, Savannah Orgeron, Cora DeSutter, and Kaitlin White helped, but the Cougars coughed the ball up for several Logger layups, leading to a 41-22 deficit at the half. Halftime stats showed the Cougars shooting 9-28 for 32% (0-10 from three-point land) with 12 turnovers (Lincoln Land scored 16 points off of those miscues), while the Loggers shot 15-30 for 50% and 4-9 from three-point range.

The Cougar defense tightened in the second half, holding Lincoln Land to just 5-25 shooting, but any chance for a comeback was hindered by ICC's own shooting, as they would go 6-24 in the second half (25%).

"We need to flush this one," Redeker said. "Losses can be lessons if you use them in the right way. We'll get back at it tomorrow in practice. We need to get ready for Lake Land on Saturday."
