East Peoria, IL - The 10th-ranked Illinois Central College Women's Basketball team (21-6, 11-2) was firing on all cylinders on their way to a 95-77 victory over Danville Area in Region 24 action on Wednesday evening. Four Cougars reached double figures:
Addy Engel (18),
Larissa Taylor (career-high 14),
Lily Luczkowiak (13),
Savannah Orgeron (12), while
Addi Swadinsky (three steals) and
Kaitlin White (two steals) led the defensive effort.
ICC also owned the boards with a commanding 44-24 edge, led by Taylor's nine caroms. Several Cougargs shared the ball well as Swadinsky led with six assists and Engel (5), Luczkowiak (5),
Kamryn Heider (4),
Cora DeSutter (3), and
Lauren Maas (3) were also in the giving mood.
"We had an aggressive mindset on both ends of the floor and played some really good basketball at times," coach
Karrie Redeker said. "Our kids were locked in defensively early on which was a key to getting the win."
The Cougars started out the game in high gear as Engel, Luczkowiak, and Taylor all scored in the paint. After two Engel freebies,
Kaitlin White drilled a three-pointer and Engel added a layup for a 15-5 lead. Jumpers by Heider and DeSutter along with a trey by Orgeron put ICC ahead 26-11 after one.
After two free throws by Engel, Orgeron, and Luczkowiak combined for the next eleven Cougar points and a 39-20 advantage. Maas had a steal and layup added two consecutive backdoor layups (assists Luczkowiak & DeSutter) to put ICC ahead 49-28, and then Engel and White closed the half with two more scores as the Cougars took a 53-28 lead into intermission.
Two baskets by Taylor and layups from Engel and Swadinsky doubled-up the Jaguars at 61-30. Orgeron added two more baskets and
Madison Jobe nailed a three-pointer, as ICC took a 74-44 lead into the fourth.
Gracie Heckert had an old-fashioned three-point play and Jobe added another long-ball as the Cougars cruised to the win.
