Quincy, IL - Addy Engel's 18 points and
Lily Luczkowiak's 14 points helped lead the #10-ranked Illinois Central College Women's Basketball team (22-6, 12-2) to a 69-57 win at John Wood (9-18, 4-10) in Region 24 action on Saturday.
Kamryn Heider added 11 points and
Addi Swadinsky dished out a game-high 10 assists for the Cougars.
ICC jumped out to an 11-2 lead behind strong defense and a balanced offensive attack as
Larissa Taylor, Engel,
Lily Luczkowiak, Swadinsky, and
Savannah Orgeron all scored. The Cougars liminted the Blazers to just five points on 2-16 shooting (13%) to take a 15-5 lead after one.
Madison Jobe had a three-pointer and a pull-up jumper to give ICC a 20-9 lead at the 7:30 mark, but John Wood got on track offensively while the Cougars went cold. Luczkowiak and Engel combined for 10 ICC points as the Blazers trimmed the Cougar lead to 30-25 at intermission.
ICC regrouped and came out strong in the third with a 14-3 run in the first four minutes. Engel had a putback and a layup (assist Heider), Heider had a runner and then an old-fashioned three-point play, Orgeron nailed a three-pointer from the top of the key, and Luczkowiak had two free throws to swell the lead to 46-32. The Cougars got into the bonus and got free throws from Engel and Orgeron, along with a trey from Heider for a 54-44 lead going into the fourth quarter.
ICC's defense held John Wood scoreless to start the final frame while
Gracie Heckert's three-pointer ignited a 7-0 run to open the game back up. Luczkowiak hit two free throws and Swadinsky got a layup (assist
Lauren Maas) for a 61-44 lead and the Cougars finished out the game from there for the final margin.
