East Peoria, IL - Lily Luczkowiak's third double-double of the season (21 points, 10 rebounds) led the 10th-ranked Illinois Central College Women's Basketball team (23-6, 13-2) to a 71-66 victory over #23 Parkland (18-11, 10-5) on Wednesday night in Region 24 action at Ramsey Gym.
Savannah Orgeron added 18 points, six rebounds, and three steals, while
Addy Engel had 13 points.
"We showed a lot of resiliency in the win tonight," coach
Karrie Redeker said. "We didn't have the greatest start, but hung together and made the plays we needed to get the win. Lily and Addy were steady throughout, and then our bench gave us great production, which was a huge factor in the win."
Luczkowiak scored the first six points and Orgeron nailed a three-pointer (assist
Cora DeSutter) as ICC took an 11-10 lead. Luczkowiak scored inside and a
Kaitlin White steal led to a
Lauren Maas layup, but the Cobras went on a late surge to go up 21-16 after a quarter.
Orgeron and Luczkowiak combined for the first seven points of the second quarter, but Parkland still held a 30-23 lead until the Cougars got rolling, courtesy of their defense, which held the Cobras to just five points in five minutes. Offensively, ICC got field goals from DeSutter, Engel, and
Kamryn Heider, but the big key was getting into the bonus and manufacturing 10 points from the charity stripe to take the lead at 41-35 at intermission.
The teams played evenly at the onset of the third as Luczkowiak had an offensive putback and Engel had a driving layup and three-pointer for a 48-41 advantage. White scored on a drive to the basket, plus Engel and Orgeron scored inside (assists Maas), but the Cougars led just 58-54 heading into the final frame.
ICC began the fourth on a 6-0 run thanks to a trey from Orgeron (assist Engel) and a Luczkowiak free throw and putback of her own miss for a 64-54 lead. Orgeron added two more baskets for a 68-56 lead with 7:25 to play when both defenses dug in. Parkland added two baskets to trim their deficit to 68-60 with 5:40 to play, and the score barely budged until a Luczkowiak basket (assist DeSutter) made it 70-61 at the 1:39 mark. Parkland added a layup and three-pointer with 15 seconds left to cut the ICC lead to 70-66, but Orgeron added one free throw for the final score.
