Centralia, IL - The seventh-ranked Illinois Central College Women's Basketball team (20-4, 10-0) took a big early lead and never looked back for a 91-56 victory over the Kaskaskia Blue Angels (6-17, 4-7) in Region 24 action on Saturday afternoon. The victory was ICC's 20th of the season, making it the 48th time in program history (of 54 possible seasons) that the Cougars have reached that mark. ICC has now won 12 games in a row and 15 of their last 16.
Six players reached double figures -
Addy Engel (16),
Kaitlin White (14),
Lily Luczkowiak (13),
Cora DeSutter (11),
Madison Jobe (11), and
Kamryn Heider (10). Lauren Mass added eight rebounds. ICC dished out 23 assists, with five each coming from Maas and
Addi Swadinsky.
The Cougars set the tone from the opening tip, getting a 5-0 lead in the first 15 seconds of the game on a Luczkowiak layup, steal, and White three-pointer. The lead swelled to 15-2 just minutes later as Engel sprung free for layups on Swadinsky assists. White added another trey as did
Kamryn Heider as ICC took a 24-9 first quarter advantage.
The Cougars extended their lead in the second as
Cora DeSutter scored nine points inside, Jobe and Heider combined for three treys, and Orgeron added scores for a 49-16 lead at the half.
ICC opened the third quarter on a 10-0 run as Luczkowiak, Engel, White, and Swadinsky all scored whiel the team defense remained strong. Kaskaskia did find a little rhythm midway through the period, but the Cougars still led 75-35 heading to the fourth quarter.
In the fourth,
Gracie Heckert nailed a three-pointer, plus Heider, White, Engel, Luczkowiak, and Taylor all scored for the final margin.
The win sets up an important top-10 ranked duel on Wednesday, as the #7 Cougars make the hour drive south to take on #10 Lincoln Land at 5:30PM. ICC won the meeting in East Peoria on January 15th 79-69, but dropped the last meeting in Springfield last season, 65-40.
