Quincy, IL - The Illinois Central College men's basketball team came from behind to defeat John Wood Community College on Wednesday, 53-46, for the Cougars' first road win against John Wood in over 10 years. The Cougars are now 12-5 on the season.
ICC came into this game down three players, with
Rickey Coleman out with an injury and
Cooper Knoll and
Jaylen Brown out with an illness. Nevertheless, the Cougars jumped out to a 6-0 lead to start the game. John Wood came back to tie the game at 10. John Wood continued to increase their lead by going on an 11-4 run to head into halftime up, 28-16.
ICC fought back in the first 5 minutes from the break, cutting their deficit to 6, down 26-32. John Wood held off the Cougars until the 9 minute mark in the second half when ICC took the lead, 37-36. ICC had a couple steals, extending the lead to 44-41 with 7 minutes to go in the game. John Wood managed to come back to tie it at 44, but
Javaughn Robinson had a layup that put ICC in the lead for the rest of the game.
John Wood missed back to back shots and
Jaylen McElmurry hit a 3-pointer, paired with an offensive rebound that just about put the game out of reach, 51-46.
Benjamin Goeh solidified the Cougars' win by making two free throws, ending the game at 53-46.
The Cougars play next at home, Saturday, January 24th at 3 pm against Lincoln Land.
