East Peoria, IL - The Illinois Central College men's basketball team snapped a three game losing streak with a win over Spoon River College, 78-67, on Wednesday. The Cougars are now 15-9 overall, and 6-5 in conference play.
Both teams started the game off with made baskets, keeping it close in the first few minutes. Spoon River had the lead, 10-7, at the first media timeout. ICC came out of that timeout and connected on back-to-back baskets by
Javaughn Robinson (20 pts, 8 rebounds), giving ICC an 11-10 lead that they would hold onto for the rest of the game.
The Cougars went on a 9-0 run, taking it to the under 12 timeout. Then,
Tyler Jolly hit two 3 pointers, forcing Spoon River to call a timeout, down 14-27 with 8:25 left in the first half.
Spoon River didn't go away, landing a couple shots, forcing ICC to take a timeout at the 4 minute mark, up 36-23. ICC then took an even more commanding lead, 45-25, their largest of the game. Spoon River made back-to-back 3 pointers to cut the lead going into halftime, 45-31.
Coming out of the half,
Peyton Hess would be fouled, making 1 of 2 free throws, increasing ICC's lead to 46-31. Spoon River then went on a 10-4 run, cutting that lead to 51-41.
Due to missed shots and turnovers, Spoon River was able to get within 2 points of ICC, 60-58, with under 8 minutes remaining, but that was the closest they would get. ICC closed out the game with help from
Marlon Herron, who had 13 points off the bench, and ended with a win, 78-67.
The Cougars play next on Wednesday, February 18, against #9 Danville Area at 7:30.
