Alex Staab enters his ninth season as the Radio Play-by-Play Broadcaster for Illinois Central College Women's Basketball. Since making his debut with the program during the 2017-2018 season, he has been the voice behind 215 broadcasts, providing coverage through the live audio platform Mixlr. Staab manages every aspect of the production himself, handling setup, technical operations, and content creation, while also assisting with the program's social media efforts.
Over the year's Staab has been on the call for several notable moments in the program's recent history, including three Region 24 Tournament Championship wins (2018, 2019, 2022), five NJCAA National Tournament Appearances (2017-18, 2018-19, 2020-21, 2021-22, 2024-25), and the Cougars' 2020-2021 Final Four appearance. His 100th broadcast came in December 2021, a 103-69 win at McHenry County, while his 200th occurred in January 2025, a 96-64 victory at Lewis & Clark.
Beyond ICC, Staab has worked with various other programs within the State of Illinois. In July of 2025, he was hired to be the Director of Sports Information at McKendree University, an NCAA DII university in Lebanon, Illinois which features 37 athletic programs. Staab handles elements like supervising three assistants and two graduate assistants, a department budget, and being the primary contact for the Bearcats in Football, Women's Basketball, Softball, Men's/Women's Golf, and Men's Hockey.
Staab also contributes to several events annually, including his work with the popular prep basketball tournament, the State Farm Holiday Classic, in which 2025 will be his seventh season serving as one of its Public Address Announcers. He has also served in that capacity at events like the Illinois High School Association State Softball Finals and the Ohio Valley Conference Softball Tournament. He has also been the Radio Play-by-Play and Public Address voice for Metamora High School Softball.
Previously, Staab provided TV Play-by-Play for Metamora High School girls basketball from 2014-2023 and for Western Illinois University women's basketball during the 2019-2020 season. He also spent one season as the Public Address Announcer for Morton High School girls basketball (2024-25) and six seasons in the same capacity for Bradley University Women's Basketball (2016-2022).
From 2021-2025, Staab was the Sports Information Assistant right here at ICC, helping launch the athletic department's current Sidearm Sports website and serving as the primary contact for Men's Golf, Volleyball, Men's Soccer, Men's Basketball, and Baseball.
A 2019 graduate of ICC and 2022 graduate of nearby Bradley University, Staab credits mentors like Brian Barnhart (University of Illinois) and Ed Hammond (Bradley University) for helping shape his approach to broadcasting: storytelling, descrptive play-calling, professionalism, and energetic delivery.
Staab was named the 2023 Sportsperson of the Year by the Illinois Softball Coaches Association for his coverage of Metamora High School Softball, and received the 2022 Selden Marquart Volunteer of the Year award from the State Farm Holiday Classic.
Staab currently resides in Mascoutah, Illinois, where he lives for his McKendree University obligations.
