Tracy Heffren

7th season at ICC
Alma mater:  Illinois Central College & Illinois State University

Tracy (Young) Heffren has guided the Cougar volleyball program back to national prominence since taking over the reins from AVCA Hall-of-Famer Sue Sinclair in 2019, accumulating five national tourney appearances and two Top 10 finishes in the past four seasons. She enters the 2025 season with a career record of 180 wins and 72 losses.

Last season saw Heffren guide the Cougars to their third straight District Title in a sweep over rival Heartland, which earned them a fourth-straight National Tourney appearance. At Nationals, ICC won their first game over Pensacola State but then fell to #1 Cowley in the Elite 8. Heffren's squad finished the season with a 32-15 overall record and saw Madison Jones and Shelby Emich earn 3rd Team NJCAA All-American Honors.

In 2023, the Cougars ended the regular season on a nine-match win streak and rode that momentum into the postseason, capturing the Central B District Championship and securing the automatic bid to Nationals and the tournament's eighth seed. The Cougars made it to the Elite 8, but ran into the top overall seed, and went into the consolation bracket, where among other results, they defeated region foe Heartland. The Cougars finished (33-12) on the season, just missing the 34-win season in 2019, the best of the Heffren Era. Emily Cronkhite and Kaitlyn Baumann were both named All-Americans.

In 2022, the Cougars narrowly missed a third consecutive trip to the Big Dance as they fell in the district championship but still posted a solid 28-15 overall record.  Heffren's 2020 team finished 4th in the Nation in the adjusted COVID spring season after garnering a 9th place finish in the fall of 2019.

Heffren starred at ICC where she was a First Team All-American in 1987 under Karen Guthmiller. She transferred to Illinois State University where she was an All-Gateway Conference performer, graduating with a bachelor’s degree in physical education. After ISU, she was an assistant coach for five years under Hall of Fame coach, Sue Sinclair, and then became the head coach at Eureka High School in 2004. Heffren had an overall record of 217-120 and won four regional titles, three sectional titles, and captured the Class 2A state championship in 2016.

Heffren also serves as a part-time advisor and success coach in the ICC Advising and Counseling Department. She and her husband, Thad, reside in Eureka and have three children, Courtney, Trevor, and Tyler.  Courtney played collegiate volleyball at ICC and Illinois Wesleyan, and is now a third-grade teacher at Germantown Hills. Trevor is working for Rocke Enterprise, and Tyler graduated from Carl Sandburg College and will be a junior at Illinois State University studying finance.
