Overland Park, Kan.---Poor shooting from the #6 ICC women's basketball team resulted in a 69-55 loss at #2 Johnson County CC on Saturday afternoon in Kansas. The Cougars shot 19-57 (33%) on the day, including a chilly 4-30 (13%) effort from three-point range. The setback is the Cougars' third consecutive loss to a Top 5 ranked team in the past week and drops their record to 2-5. JCCC improves to 8-0.
The Cougars went up 4-0 but that lead was short-lived as they turned the ball over on seven straight possessions to face a 21-11 first quarter deficit. ICC pulled to within 30-22 as
Kayla Gordon,
Keijah Gray, and
T'yana Lovelace combined for scores but a four-minute scoring drought gave the hosts a 37-25 halftime advantage.
ICC began the third quarter with a renewed sense of vigor as
Kristyn Mitchell and McNamee scored inside on feeds from
Courtney Jones. The defense turned up, while McNamee and Gordon combined for scores to keep the Cougars on the attack and a
Kyleigh Block three-pointer (assist Jones) cut the deficit to 53-49 heading into the fourth.
Any bid for a Cougar comeback was quickly thwarted by the Cavaliers, who opened the final quarter on an 11-0 run thanks to five missed three-pointers and four Cougar turnovers on their first nine possessions, giving JCCC a 66-51 lead.
