Champaign, Ill. - They were just five days removed from combining for 215 points. That's what was on the table for round two between the ICC men's basketball team (9-16, 2-7) faced off with #25 Parkland (16-6, 7-1) in Champaign on Saturday afternoon. Now in all likelihood, the matchup wouldn't produce that much offense a second time around, but it certainly would be competitive.
Frankly, it didn't look like that at first. The Cobras were red-hot to start, getting their lead as high as a 23-point margin.
Tony Wysinger called his team in to regroup at that point spread. From there, ICC was able to work it back to a 7-point game at the halftime break (39-32 Cobras).
From there, it was nip and tuck the whole way through. The Cougars battled down to the end.
Tony Mabon Jr. would hit a running jumper to set the score at 69-68 Parkland. With plenty of time left, it would be logical to assume that Mabon Jr.'s shot did not set the final score - but it ultimately did.
ICC was able to secure a jump ball with 25 seconds left on the clock. With the play drawn up for
Zach Lewkowski, the mid range couldn't fall and a loose ball scrum ran out the clock and saw the Cougars within grasp of a top-25 win.
The Cougars now have nearly a full week off from games before returning to action in the regular season finale against John Wood on February 26th. The John Wood game is Sophomore Day - as the men's basketball program will honor
Jacquan Binion,
Zach Lewkowski,
Koran Johnson, and
Kyle Hawthorne.
