Champaign, IL---Freshman pitcher
Kiersten Manning (Normal/Normal Community) pitched a three-hit shutout to help the ICC softball team split with Parkland in Region 24 action on Sunday in Champaign. The Cougars lost 4-0 in Game 1 but rode the arm of Manning and a two-run home run by
Olivia Drish (Milan/Rockridge) in Game 2. Manning struck out nine in the win.
"Kiersten was huge for us and our defense was solid behind her," ICC head coach
Heather Doty said. "Olivia's home run was also key as it gave us some confidence to start Game 2. We're really proud of how our team battled and will continue to build on this."
Game 1 Recap:
The Cougars had four hits but could not manufacture any of them into scoring opportunities.
Sydnee Usherwood had two singles,
Hanna Evans a double, and
Allie Scrivner a single.
Evans pitched six innings, giving up four runs on four hits while striking out seven.
Game 2 Recap:
Sydnee Usherwood led the game off with a walk and came in on the Drish blast to left field putting ICC up 2-0 in the first. Manning doubled in the 4th as ICC added two runs on Parkland errors to take a 4-0 lead and then scratched another run in the 5th on a Manning RBI single that scored Scrivner.
Olivia Stirnaman also had two singles for ICC.
Next up: The Cougars, now 14-8 overall and 4-4 in Region 24 play, will play at Southeastern Iowa on Monday (April 11) in a 2pm double-header at Wagner Athletic Complex in West Burlington, IA.
