Alton, Ill.---
Travis Lutz (Bartonville/Limestone) threw a five-hitter to help the ICC baseball team earn a 3-1 win over Lewis and Clark in the opening game of their M-WAC series on Friday at Lloyd Hopkins Field. The Cougars fell 2-1 in Game 2, despite a solid outing on the mound from
Garrett Peterson (Eureka/Eureka).
Game 1 Recap
Lutz was in command all game, striking out eleven and giving up just one run on five hits. The Bradley signee pitched his first complete game of the season, helping ICC get back in the win column after an eight-game skid.
The Cougars got on the board in the second inning on singles by
Evan Pogioli (Pekin/Pekin),
Brody Reed (Washington/Washington), and
Chase Ulrich (East Peoria/East Peoria) to go up 1-0.
Zach Otten (Bartonville/Limestone) also singled, and then Reed scored on an LCC error on a grounder by
Coltin Quagliano (Kewanee/Wethersfield) to make the score 2-0.
The Trailblazers scored one run in the bottom of the third making it 2-1.
Ben Nofsinger (Washington/Peoria Notre Dame) hit a solo shot to left field for the final margin. He went 3-4 while Reed and Pogioli each went 2-4.
Game 2 Recap
Peterson also kept the Trailblazers off balance, allowing just one run in the second and one in the third inning. Unfortunately, the Cougars only managed a run in the top of the sixth when Quagliano doubled and was brought in on a Nofsinger single.
Peterson took the tough loss as he gave up one earned run on six hits to go along with three strikeouts. Box scores for ICC for both games appear below.
Next up: The two teams will meet again on Saturday, April 16th in a 1pm double-header at Thome Field.
