East Peoria, Ill.---The ICC softball team had a convincing 10-2 win over Heartland in Game 1 of their Region 24 double-header at Thome Field but then dropped Game 2 by a score of 10-6. The Cougars (19-11) belted three home runs in the first game only to see the Hawks (11-13) turn the tables to claim the nightcap.
Game 1 Recap
Olivia Drish would not be denied at the plate when runners were on base, driving in four runs on two hits to lead ICC past Heartland 10-2. Drish drove in three runs on a home run in the first on a 1-1 count and added an RBI single in the fourth.
Sydnee Usherwood added a two-run home run in the second inning as the Cougars went up 5-0 and added three more in the third inning on a
Hanna Evans three-run bomb to lead 8-0.
Evans was the winning pitcher, surrendering two runs on seven hits over five innings, striking out eight and walking one.
ICC saw the ball well, racking up ten hits in the game. Usherwood (3-3),
Priscilla Peek, and Drish collected multiple hits to lead the way.
Game 2 Recap
Game 2 was a back and forth affair until HCC tallied three runs in the top of the 5th and three in the top of the 7th to salvage the split.
Kiersten Manning fired up the offense in the first inning, homering on the first pitch of her at bat, scoring two runs. The Cougars added two more runs in the bottom of the third, but the Hawks tied things up at four as they scored two runs on an error.
Down 7-4 in the bottom of the fifth, the Cougars got three straight singles by Peek, Drish, and
Alicia Casas to score two runs but that was as close as ICC would get.
Manning took the loss for the home team, allowing seven hits and seven runs over four and two-thirds innings, striking out five and walking one.
