BSB Splits with Vincennes

Lutz and Reed homers power ICC to Game Two Win

Vincennes, Ind. - A quality weekend road trip laid in front of the ICC baseball program (9-17, 5-13), as they would make the drive down to MWAC foe Vincennes for a four-game series.

In this Friday opener, as is said across multiple sports - 'just chip away'. To varying degrees, each team did so in one game apiece. In game one, it was the host Trailblazers who never scored more than two runs in an inning, but also scored in all seven innings in route to an 11-3 victory. Then in game two, it was the Cougars' turn. Three one-run innings followed by a two-run seventh chipped away at the scoreboard for a nightcap victory by a 5-4 final.

Game One | VINCENNES 11, ICC COUGARS 3
The Trailblazers would score on an RBI double, fielder's choice, and RBI double in the first three frames to take an early but slim 3-0 lead. Yet they were far from done with their bats. A wild pitch and triple made it 5-0. Ultimately, Vincennes would cross the plate nine times without an ICC run.

Alas, the Cougars were able to make a late push, as a seventh-inning RBI double from Coltin Quagliano and RBI single from Max Jones, all concluded with Quagliano eventually scoring on an error. The three runs in that seventh frame were the best single-inning offensive output of the day for Brett Kelley's Cougars.

Game Two | ICC COUGARS 5, VINCENNES 4
When it came time for game two, the bats for ICC were in the right spot. Although they'd lost the opener, that three-run inning late certainly bred positivity. Although down 2-0 through two innings, the Cougars would get back within a run on a passed ball advancement from Zach Otten

The difference this time around was the efforts on the mound of Garrett Peterson and Brayden Elkin, who were able to hold the Trailblazers without a run in the fourth, fifth, and sixth innings. While Peterson and Elkin were holding it down for the pitching, Brody Reed launched a home run and Jake Burge scored Max Jones on a single to tie the game at 3-3.

When it came time for the seventh and final chance at a victory, enter Travis Lutz. The freshman would send one over the fence, scoring Ben Nofsinger and giving ICC a 5-3 lead.

Freshman Kaleb Gauf would be tasked with closing out the bottom of the seventh, and did just that. The Trailblazers may have gotten three hits in the first three at-bats of the frame, but Gauf locked in from there, striking out three of the next four batters to secure a one-run ICC victory.

What's Next?
