Galesburg, Ill. - The ICC Baseball program (10-20) was only two days removed from a home loss to Southeastern Iowa, and an opportunity to turn the page was in front of them, traveling to Carl Sandburg. ICC and the Chargers battled to a close 8-6 Cougar victory back on April 21st in East Peoria. Round two was perhaps even more exciting, and even more runs would cross the plate.
On the surface, however, it didn't seem like the game was headed for a low-scoring affair, as the Chargers held a slim 2-1 lead after three innings. A
Coltin Quagliano home run got ICC on the board for the first time.
The Cougars took a fair amount of control in the fifth when runs scored in back-to-back plate appearances with a sacrifice fly from
Max Jones and three-run home run from
Travis Lutz.
ICC's lead would not last long, as the three-run lead turned into a two-run deficit, when the Chargers powered ahead for a five-run fifth inning.
Just as soon as the aforementioned lead came and went, it returned when a
Ben Nofsinger grand slam turned it around to 9-7 Cougars in the sixth.
With only a few innings left to go, a solo shot from
Jake Burge gave ICC a 10-9 lead in the seventh.
That would be the end of the ICC offense. Sandburg returned it to tied with a solo home run in the bottom of the 8th. With a 10-10 score going into the ninth, the Chargers would need a walkoff to win it.
They walked off. An RBI sacrifice fly would score the game's final run three at-bats into the inning and giving the hosts an 11-10 win.
