East Peoria, Ill. - The ICC baseball team took an early lead against Carl Sandburg on Wednesday night, only to see the Chargers score late to earn a 7-6 win at Thome Field on Wednesday night in non-conference action. The Cougars (14-25) had a 5-0 lead after two innings before CSC (25-21) rallied to get the win.
Jake Burge got ICC on the board with a three-run homer to left field in the bottom of the first, scoring
Brody Reed who had singled and
Max Jones who had walked. The home team added two more in the second on RBI singles by Reed and
Ben Nofsinger to go up 5-0.
Sandburg scored two runs in the top of the third and four in the top of the fourth to go up 6-5. ICC answered with a run on an RBI single from
Coltin Quagliano to tie the game at 6-all in the bottom of the fourth.
Neither team could muster much offense until the Chargers got a single, walk, single, and another walk in the top of the ninth to score the go-ahead run for the win.
Reed and
Jackson Powell each went 2-4 from the plate; Burge tallied three RBI while Nofsinger, Reed, and Quagliano each had one.
Zach Otten and Powell both doubled.
Kaiden Rixner (3.2 innings) and
Brayden Elkins (1.1) pitched scoreless middle innings while Cam Glick, despite three strikeouts in the ninth, took the loss.
Next up: The Cougars will play in their final M-WAC series in double-headers against Spoon River. Games are scheduled for Friday, May 13 at 1pm in Canton and will finish up the series Saturday, May 14 at 1pm at Thome Fields.
