Oxford, AL - The ICC softball team collected seven hits but could only push one run across the plate as they dropped a 3-1 decision to Oakland CC at the NJCAA National Tournament on Friday afternoon at Choccolocco Park. The Cougars' season closes with a 33-20 overall record.
"We had some chances but just couldn't get the breaks we needed," head coach
Heather Doty said. "Give credit to their pitcher for bearing down when she needed to."
Oakland took a 2-0 lead in the second inning on two singles and three walks. The Raiders added another run in the bottom of the third to go up 3-0.
Allie Scrivner got things brewing with a lead-off single in the top of the fifth inning.
Sydnee Usherwood walked and
Olivia Stirnaman had an RBI single to left field to pull ICC to within 3-1.
Olivia Drish singled, putting runners on the corners with one out but the Cougars grounded into a double play to end the inning.
ICC threatened again in the top of the seventh as Scrivner and Usherwood each had base hits to lead off the inning but the OCC pitcher got three straight outs to conclude the game.
Freshman
Kiersten Manning went six innings, giving up three runs (two earned) while striking out seven.
Hitting leaders
Allie Scrivner 2-3, 1 run scored
Olivia Stirnaman 2-4, RBI
Sydnee Usherwood 2-3

"This season has been a roller coaster in a lot of ways but our kids stayed together through it all and picked each other up when needed and that's the true testament of a team," Doty said. "We're very proud of their efforts and thankful for the opportunity to play at Nationals."
