East Peoria, Ill. - A dismal third quarter led to an 86-60 loss for the #19 Illinois Central College women's basketball team as they fell 86-60 to #2 Kirkwood on Saturday afternoon at Ramsey Gym. After facing a 37-28 halftime deficit ICC was outscored ICC 31-12 in the third period, leading to their first loss of the season.
"We had a really solid start," coach
Karrie Redeker said, "but then struggled scoring which caused our defense to let down. We do want to credit Kirkwood as they have a complete team with outstanding shooters. We'll keep at it."
The Cougars had the hot hand to start the game, hitting four three-pointers in the first quarter---three by
Savannah Orgeron and one by
Miya Webb as KCC held a 20-18 advantage after the first ten minutes. However, Kirkwood started the second period on an 8-1 run and the Cougars managed just one field goal by Webb to go along with six free throws in the entire quarter to trail by nine points at the half.
Kirkwood didn't take long to gain complete control in the third as they scored on nine of their first ten possessions, with five of those being three-pointers to take a 60-32 lead. A
Jhanel Coleman basket and runner by
Saniya Tutt gave ICC a little momentum but the Cougars still trailed 68-40 heading into the last stanza.
Bright spots in the fourth quarter were two scores on post-ups from
Elena Redgate, three-pointers from Webb and
Paris Wilson, and put-backs by
Cora DeSutter and
Naomi Elliott.
Scoring leaders (assists, rebounds, steals, & blocks were unavailable on the official stats)
