MGOLF Wins Skyhawk; Woods Medals Again

Cougars pick up impressive 3rd win of the fall

9/21/2023 5:58:00 PM

Deer Grove, Ill. - The time for coach Sean Kennedy and ICC men's golf at Deer Valley Golf Club didn't seem like it would be off to a good start. Temperatures were in the low-mid 60s, and the wind was estimated to be blowing in the mid-high teens. As the cherry on top, some slight precipitation was falling as the Cougars prepped for teeing off on their first hole. ICC was able to shake off the bad omen and have another remarkable fall tournament, taking home the team championship by three strokes. Peyton Woods puts himself on a bit of a streak, as the reigning ICC Athlete of the Week took Medalist Honors for the second consecutive tournament, with the freshman carding a +2/74 in the round.

The start of the round saw Jarod Oderwald emerge early, even holding the lead in spots. Oderwald would ultimately birdie on four holes and settle into seventh place. Hunter Ficken made a late charge from the leaderboard's mid-section, climbing into the top 10 with three birdies and joining Oderwald in that seventh place tie. Alas, there was room for one more Cougar golfer in that seventh place slot. Brady Gruden, who had one of ICC's two eagles on the day (Par 5 8th) made up a trio of Cougars carding a +6/78.

Collin Roche (+11 / 83) and Luke Markley (+11 / 83) combined for a 23rd place tie and three birdies.

Quinn Cox (+13 / 85) birdied three times as part of a tie for 32nd.

Brock Taylor finished in a tie for 40th in the 80-player field, putting all eight Cougars within the top half of the leaderboard. Taylor had the other ICC eagle on the day, carding it on the Par 4 4th.

Circling back to the team scoring, ICC held strong at the top for most of the afternoon, with tournament host Sauk Valley creeping in at the end, but the Cougars held on, +30 to +33.

This is the third tournament win of the fall season for Coach Kennedy's group, and fourth total under the second-year head coach's tutelage.
