After a record-setting fall season, optimism is brewing for the 8
th ranked Illinois Central College men's golf team this spring. The team will open play on Monday, March 2 at Goose Pond Colony Resort in Scottsboro, AL and head coach Sean Kennedy has again prepared a rigorous schedule to help prepare the team for another successful post-season run.
Program Records Fell in the Fall
The fall season saw several great performances as the team won three tournament titles and All-American sophomore
Trey Boecker won an individual Mid-West Athletic Conference championship. Boecker led the Cougars to a Highland 36 team title as he set an ICC 36-hole scoring record of
133 (11 under par). Freshman All-American
Connor Watson set an ICC 18-hole scoring record of
63 (8 under par) leading the Cougars to a Rend Lake Warrior Championship title.
Boecker, an SIU-Edwardsville commit, won the M-WAC Conference Individual Championship and is currently the #1 ranked player in the latest NJCAA individual national rankings. Watson had a spectacular fall, with two fall tournament individual titles. He is currently ranked 16th in the latest NJCAA individual national rankings.
Cougars Will Be Tested Early
Tomorrow's tournament is the Ron Marshall Spring Fling, named in honor of the late ICC golf coach who was instrumental in securing Goose Pond Colony Resort as a rotating host of the NJCAA National Golf Championship from 2005-15. The Cougars hosted last season and will be looking to defend the title in Monday's return trip to the south.
The competition will be stiff as the 16-team field features 8
th ranked ICC, along with the 10th, 11th, 12th, 14th, 16th, 18th, and 19th ranked teams in the latest NJCAA Golf national rankings.
"I'm so pleased to announce a quality field honoring our former Coach Marshall," Kennedy said. "Playing seven teams in the Top 20 will be quite the early season test."
The Cougars will travel to Missouri in mid-March for the Cardinal 36 before hosting the Cougar Spring Preview on March 18-19 at Weaver Ridge in Peoria. Kennedy's squad will continue competing in several high-level tournaments throughout March and April as the weather warms before readying for the post-season.
Returning to Swan Lake Is the Goal
The plan is to return to Nationals at Swan Lake Resort in Plymouth, IN in May where the team finished as the 2025 NJCAA National Runners-Up, the best-ever finish in school history. As a freshman, Boecker's 3
rd place individual finish was also record-setting as it was the program's highest individual finish.
Quotes from Head Coach Sean Kennedy
"We're anxious to begin our journey to return to Swan Lake. We had a successful fall season, winning three tournaments while only returning one starter from last year's National Runner-Up team. Sophomores
Brooks Cluver,
Logan Smith, and
Drake Kaufman all gained valuable lineup experience and are eager to compete for tournament titles. Freshmen brothers Alex and
Andrew Kuykendall put in the off-season conditioning work and look ready to compete with the sophomores for meaningful playing time. We have a challenging spring schedule ahead of us with nationally ranked opponents at every tournament to test us. It's time to start the journey to return to Swan Lake."
