MGOLF wins Duane Chanay Invite

Five Cougars place Top 10, Team bests 12 others

8/26/2024 5:41:00 PM

Coal Valley, IL - The Illinois Central College men's golf team has been on a tear to start the Fall 2024 season. After winning the Highland 36 on Friday, the Cougars had a short turnaround to the Duane Chanay Invite at Oakwood Country Club just three days later. Turns out, even with the 1pm round reaching feel-like temperatures of 110 degrees, it was no problem, as ICC dominated the field, winning the team title by 26 strokes, and placing five players within the Individual Top 10.

Trey Boecker, fresh off medalist honors on Friday, played another remarkable tournament, finishing in a tie for second place with Cougar teammate Quinn Cox. Both Boecker and Cox had at least one round of a -1/70.

Boecker would birdie on five holes, with four of them coming in his second round, the aforementioned -1 / 70. Boecker's best hole of the day would be the par-4 16th, where he birdied in both rounds for a 3.

Cox impressed with eight birdies on the day, six of them coming in one round (his -1 / 70). He also birdied three straight holes on Par 4's from the 10th-12th holes at Oakwood.

Peyton Woods was a single stroke behind the duo for the tournament with five birdies, and a four-birdie second round, including three birdies in four holes from the 13th-16th in his second round.

Brock Taylor found himself just one stroke behind Woods with an eight-birdie round of his own, and dazzled by getting a birdie on four of the last six holes of his first round. Taylor's day included two birdies on the Par 3 8th and 14th holes in the first round.

The tightness of the leaderboard continued with the quality day from DJ Norman, who finished one stroke behind Taylor. Norman would get two birdies on the day (Par-5 13th, Par-4 2nd) and finish with 30/36 holes of par or better.

Drake Kaufman birdied the Par-4 2nd, Par-3 15th, and Par-4 12th over the course of his day, including breaking 80 with a +5/76 in his final round of the day.

Brooks Cluver had a two-birdie round to start the day, both on par-5 holes, the 1st and 15th. Cluver would go on to break 80 in both rounds, getting a 79 in the first round and 78 in the second round.

Hunter Ficken broke 80 in his first round, including a birdie on the Par-5 13th and 12 holes of a birdie or better.

HE SAID IT - QUOTE FROM COACH SEAN KENNEDY
"An outstanding effort and performance for these Cougars. An early 5:30AM bus time, an unfamiliar course, and very uncomfortable playing conditions. These Cougars have really adapted to 'compete, don't complain'. The Cougars will enjoy a nice holiday weekend with their families and look forward to getting back on the bus to defend our Skyhawk Championship next week."
