Boecker Medals Again; Cougars sweep Top 3 Individuals

9/5/2024 10:37:00 PM

Deer Grove, IL - The Illinois Central College men's golf team made the trip up to the Skyhawk Invitational at Deer Valley Golf Club on Thursday afternoon, and they certainly dazzled. Trey Boecker was terrific, nearly breaking the course's record, and also getting his second medalist honor within the first three fall tournaments. The team wowed overall as well, breaking the 280 mark with a -9 / 279. It's all part of three wins in three tournaments for the Cougars.

Boecker, frankly, could not have gotten off to much better a start. The freshman birdied six of the first nine holes he played, and birdied two more on the back nine for a -7 / 65. His only bogey would come after finding a fairway bunker on the par-4 12th. He would birdie the round's first three holes - the par-4 first, par-3 second, and par-5 third.

DJ Norman followed Boecker in the standings with a four-birdie round, including back-to-back birdies on the par-3 13th and par-4 14th.

Quinn Cox completed the Cougar sweep of the individual top three with his performance. Cox birdied three of the front nine and two more on the back nine to tie with Norman by tournament's end. Cox also had back-to-back birdies, doing so on the par-5 third and par-4 fourth.

Brock Taylor would end up a mere stroke behind. Taylor would birdie twice on the front nine, and even eagle the par-5 eighth. Another birdie would find its way to the scorecard on the back nine (par-4 11th).

Peyton Woods would birdie the par-5 8th and par 16 of the other 17 holes on the course, all good enough to be in the top 10 individually.

Brady Gruden got himself a three-birdie round, with two of them coming on holes of the par-5 variety (third, eighth).

Brooks Cluver evenly split his four birdies over the course of the round, including three of them coming on par-5's.

Hunter Ficken would birdie the par-4 fourth and par on 10 other holes.

Drake Kaufman birdied the par-5 eighth and would par eight of the nine holes on the back nine.

HE SAID IT - THOUGHTS FROM COACH SEAN KENNEDY
"Trey's round was special and exciting to watch. DJ, Quinn, Brock, and Peyton all played well. The Cougars are looking forward to Monday's visit to Bloomington. The sophomores did not play well there last year, and are looking for a little payback. The Cougars will enjoy that big red nine under par tonight, but then head right back out to Metamora Fields tomorrow afternoon to get some work in."
