St. Louis, MO - Addy Engel's 20 points led #3 ranked Illinois Central College Women's Basketball team (10-1) to a 74-37 win over St. Louis on Tuesday night. The game was the Cougars' last contest before the holiday break while the Archers (0-10) were playing their fourth game against a Region 24 opponent.
The Cougars stormed out to a 16-point lead after a quarter, and despite drawing even with the Archers in the game's midsection, finished the game on a +21 scoring margin in the final frame to soar to a 10th win in 11 games.
St. Louis scored the first points of the game, but the Cougars countered with a 12-0 run, forcing an Archer timeout to quiet the momentum ICC had grasped. The Cougars would spread the offensive attack among six different players and take a 22-6 lead by the time the first quarter came to an end.
The Archers, meanwhile, brought a rejuvenated offense to the second quarter, hitting a pair of three-pointers, but ICC responded with another six-player scoring quarter to hold onto a 38-16 lead with both teams headed to the locker room and Engel already in double figures with a 10-point effort.
St. Louis maintained their offense into the third and turned in their best performance of the game, with even the hotly contested shots still finding a way through to the bottom of the net. ICC held serve with a 13-point quarter, but the Archers' 19-point frame made it a 51-35 game after three.
Alas, St. Louis would get no closer. Sensing the Archers' being within reach, ICC turned on the offensive jets one last time, and clamped down on defense to outscore the hosts 23-2 in the final frame.
Hannah West (7 points) and
Addy Engel (7 points) led the way in scoring for the quarter, with
Kaitlin White also scoring five of her eight for the game.
Larissa Taylor continued her quality play, nearly getting double-doubles in consecutive games, with her line reading 8 points and 11 rebounds.
Maziah Shelton was right there as well, getting both 9 points and 9 rebounds.
With the 10th win, ICC's record thus far is the program's best start since 2018-19, when they were also (10-1) through 11 games.
