East Peoria, Ill. - The Illinois Central College women's soccer team is the #1 seed in this week's upcoming Region 24 tournament and will host #4 Lewis & Clark on Tuesday, October 25 at CougarPlex Field in semi-final action.
In addition to completing an unblemished regular season with a 14-0 record, the ladies earned national recognition for the first time ever by being ranked in the NJCAA DI poll (the Cougars are currently #16) and will look to continue to make program history by winning their first-ever Region title in school history.
"We've accomplished great things so far but know the tournament is a whole different scenario," coach
Javier Valle said. "It won't be easy but we are confident we can continue to do what has gotten us to this point as we are playing our best at the moment."
ICC has scored 41 goals on the season and is 3rd in the NJCAA in shot percentage (1.171), 4th in shots on goal percentage (3.571), and 7th in shutouts (8). Sophomore
Paula Gallardo leads the team with 15 goals while assist leaders are
Meritxell Mena Borrull (9) and
Lotte Adams (8).
ICC took both meetings against LCCC---a 1-0 win in East Peoria on September 17 and then a 5-1 victory on September 21 in Godfrey. Lewis and Clark enters the contest with a 6-8 overall record.
If ICC wins Tuesday, they would host the winner of #2 Wabash Valley/#3 Lincoln Trail on Sunday, October 30 at 12pm at CougarPlex Field for the region championship.
