Mattoon, Ill. - Freshman
Savannah Orgeron's career-high 34 points was not enought for the ICC women's basketball team (3-4), as they fell 90-67 to the fifth-ranked Morton College Panthers (9-1) on Friday evening in the Lake Land Classic at the LLC Fieldhouse in Mattoon. Three other freshmen -
Jhanel Coleman,
Cora DeSutter, and
Addi Swadinsky, each added nine points.
Morton charged out to a 22-12 first quarter lead, but the Cougars went on a run and clawed back to trail just 27-26 at the midway point of the second quarter. Swadinsky hit two jumpers in the paint, Coleman scored inside, and Orgeron had a jumper and six free throws (four of which were on two techincals against the Morton bench) and ICC was back in business. Unfortunately, the Panthers turned up their pressure and forced several ICC turnovers that turned into layups resulting in a 17-2 Panther run that gave them a 44-28 lead at the half.
Orgeron kept on the offensive pursuit with 13 points in the third quarter, but it was not enough to make a dent in the deficit as ICC trailed 70-50 heading into the final period.
