Toronto, Canada - Former Illinois Central College baseball player Mason McCoy's dream of playing Major League Baseball has come true as he was called up to the Toronto Blue Jays on Tuesday. McCoy, who was a two-time NJCAA All-American shortstop for the Cougars in 2013-15, has been with the Blue Jays' Triple A team in Buffalo since late spring.
McCoy is hitting .226 over 402 at bats in Triple A as a member of the Seattle Mariners and Toronto Blue Jays systems this season. He has notched 64 RBIs, 66 runs, 12 home runs and 23 stolen bases.
He will travel to Toronto today to be ready for the Washington Nationals' series and will be active on the roster. The Blue Jays face the Nationals (Tuesday) at 6:07 p.m. (CT) in Toronto.
McCoy was selected in the sixth round of the 2017 Major League Baseball First-Year Player Draft by the Baltimore Orioles with the 188th pick.
After his career at Illinois Central College, the Washington High School star played for the University of Iowa from 2015-17.
McCoy is the program's third player to reach the Majors, with Hall of Famer Jim Thome being the first Cougar to ever play Major League Baseball. ICC lefty (2006-07) and current Bradley pitching coach Andrew Werner made his Major League debut with the San Diego Padres in 2013. Werner was also a pitching coach for the Cougars in 2016. Both McCoy and Werner played for current head coach
Brett Kelley.
