East Peoria, Ill. - It was a perfect night for baseball, as coach
Brett Kelley and the ICC baseball team took on Carl Sandburg in a fall doubleheader. NJCAA rules do not permit the reporting of scores, but plenty of stats are shareable from the Cougars' twin bill.
GAME 1 NOTABLE MOMENTS
Brody Palmer struck out two batters as part of a 1-2-3 top of the 3rd.
Jake Stewart launched a triple over the right fielder in the 4th.
Elliot Seckman made a diving catch and doubled off the runner at first base to end the top of the 6th.
In the bottom of the 7th,
Nate Bartman drew a leadoff walk, which was followed by a RBI single from
Aidan Fulton to cap the offense for the game.
GAME 2 NOTABLE MOMENTS
Aiden Leemans threw two no-hit innings to start the game.
Bryce Porter lined a two-run single into left field in the 1st.
As part of a two-strikeout inning, the latter for
Hunter Thornton got himself and the Cougars out of a bases-loaded jam in the 3rd.
ICC's biggest offensive inning of the night was in the 5th.
Cam Semelroth,
Cam Prickett,
Eli Boeye, and
Griffin Roesch all drew walks, with Roesch's also being an RBI with the bases loaded. Boeye and Roesch would both score when
Jake Stewart roped a two-run double into right field to conclude a three-run inning.
Brett Granger tossed a 1-2-3 top of the 6th.
Tyler Bishop had an RBI double in the bottom of the 6th.
Hunter McCaw wrapped up the evening with a solid inning in the 7th, striking out four. One did reach, with the other three being swinging (x2) and looking (x1).
HE SAID IT - QUOTES FROM COACH BRETT KELLEY
On his general thoughts about the pitching in Game Two
"I told the guys afterwards, I thought we had some good individual performances today, we just need to be better as a team. I thought
Blake Norton threw the ball pretty well. I thought (Aiden) Leemans threw it well. Hunter (McCaw) did a pretty solid job. They're capable of pitching really well. I just would've liked to have seen us start off a little bit better. What hurt us today were the free bases."
On what moments like Hunter Thornton getting out of a bases-loaded jam do for the team
"He's capable of doing that. We feel like we're pretty good in our bullpen. We have guys that have some swing and miss stuff. I think Hunter's going to be one of those guys. He's a two-way guy for us too."
On what, 20+ seasons in, his general fall season philosophy is
"We want to give a lot of guys opportunities to show us what they can do in the fall. We'll work on whatever they need to work on, get them stronger in the weight room over the winter, and then work with them in the spring."
