Council Bluffs, IA -
Noelia Zaengerle,
Emiliana Aimar, and
Vivienne Hardimann each scored goals that propelled the Illinois Central College women's soccer team to a 3-1 victory over Southwestern Illinois in the Central District Tournament quarter-finals at the Wiebe Soccer Complex on Friday evening. The win avenged two previous losses to the Blue Storm as the Cougars advanced to Sunday's semi-finals where they will face Iowa Western.
"We got a top performance from the girls and and dominated from start to finish," head coach Javi Valle said. "I do wish we could've put away more of our chances but we're still proud of the team for getting the job done and controlling the game even after they scored to make the score 2-1 and us missing a penalty to go 3-1 that could've easily put the team down."
Zaengerle's goal came with just :27 seconds left before halftime to put the Cougars up 1-0. Aimar's score gave ICC a 2-0 lead before SWIC answered to cut the Cougar lead in half at 2-1. Hardimann added an insurance goal with just under two minutes left to play for the final margin.
The Cougars (6-5-1) will play at 3:30 pm against the host Reivers (11-0-3). The teams met back on August 25 with IWCC winning 5-0.
The first semi-final game will take place at 1pm between Lewis & Clark and Indian Hills.
"Now we recover & look at another top match on Sunday vs Iowa Western," Valle said.
